Aerialtronics sets new benchmark with Altura Nucleo+

Aerialtronics announces the Nucleo+ multi-spectral sensor box boosting visual and infrared camera, multi-spectrum image overlay, massive on-board data processing and cloud storage capabilities.

Aerialtronics is taking UAS on-board video cameras to a new level with the Nucleo + multi-spectral sensor box, which is a new, fully digital version of the Dupla Vista multi-spectrum double sensor developed with Dutch partner 3D-ONE.

The multi-spectrum double sensor features a 1080p HD daylight camera with up to 16 x zoom and 30 fps side-by-side and a calibrated 50 fps high resolution thermal camera with a 640 x 480 pixel resolution. The Nucleo+ also comes with massive real-time onboard processing power.

The key advantage of the new sensor is that it uses both cameras at the same time. This enables the Nucleo+ to switch between the daylight and infrared radiation (IR) channels and overlay the two video feeds in one multi-spectral image. This feat has been realised by fitting the sensor box with a small, lightweight on-board Linux-based computer which features a flexible FPGA for real-time image processing.

The system was developed in cooperation with the Dutch-based partner 3D-ONE, a recognised provider of innovative measurement solutions, boasting Airbus Group and the European Space Agency among its clients.

With the Nucleo+, daylight and thermal images can be overlaid and transmitted in combination with mission data, such as flight time, GPS location, speed and imaging settings, together with vehicle status data like orientation and battery level. In addition, all the data can be safely stored on the 128bit AES encrypted on-board SSD.

All these capabilities make the Nucleo+ sensor particularly useful for customers who require multi-spectrum (hence multi-sensor) observations during one flight and need on-board processing power to perform specialist operations, like mapping, security and inspection.

Aerialtronics will make a Software Development Kit (SDK) available to a number of selected development partners to access the massive capabilities of the on-board processor, thus enabling applications like on-board image stitching, object tracking, filtering and image overlaying.

The next step will be to unlock the Nucleo+’s full potential by connecting it to the cloud and making it part of the Internet of Things. In future, a real-time UAS-cloud connection will allow data to be post-processed for further analysis, sharing and comparison with other sensors.
